CAR NAMES

Ever wonder how some cars (mostly companies) got their names? Here’s a small sampling. Most of them were named after the founders so when you see a car, you now know there was a real person behind it.

Ford- Henry Ford, naturally.

Chevrolet-named after Louis Chevrolet who co-founded the company that would later merge with GM.

Chrysler- from Walter Chrysler who founded the company.

Buick- named after David Dunbar Buick. He created his company and fell on hard times before selling it to William Durant who turned the company around and made it the most successful in the country. Later, Buick (the company) formed the cornerstone of the new alliance of General Motors.

Renault- named after founder, Louis Renault who was later imprisoned for collaborating with the Nazis and there, he died a mysterious death.

Oldsmobile- Random Eli Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle company in 1897 and later the name was Ransom Olds and then shortened to Oldsmobile.

Rolls-Royce- Sir Henry Royce founded a company but it was Charles Rolls who built it up, hence the car carried both of their names.

Dodge- from the Dodge Brothers, John and Horace, who started off making transmissions for the Olds company and decided to compete with henry Ford for inexpensive cars.

Mercedes-Benz- Karl Benz is considered by many to be the actual inventor of the automobile. The Mercedes comes from a condition imposed by his primary investor. To include the name of his daughter, Mercedes.
