  • 16-bit plot-Standard story plot line in science fiction and role playing games. The bad guys rule the world and you're the leader of a small rebel band. Overthrow the bad guys.
  • 404-Something that should be there but isn't, from the error 404- "document not found. " that is all too common on the Internet
  • 411-To get information. Based on the old phone number for information which was 411 before the current 555-1212 came into play. When someone asks for the 411, they want the information about something.
  • Acme-From the Road Runner cartoons as it was the source of all of Wiley E. Coyote’s equipment that was doomed to fail. Refers to high tech equipment that is likely to malfunction.
  • Aleph-The location where an incredible amount of information is stored.
  • Alpha-The first version of a system that isn’t quite ready but allows people to get an idea of what it is. Used often on computer programs and video games.
  • Alphanumeric-The characters which consist of letters, numbers and symbols found on a standard keyboard.
  • Analog -Refers to things once trendy but now out of date. From the first devices which were analog before digital.
  • anime -The more popular term for Japanese Animation such as cartoons, comics, and film. Anime is very popular in Japan and has a huge fan base in the USA as well.
  • anorak -A person who has little sense of fashion.
  • arcade perfect-An arcade game that is converted successfully to a home system. \
  • Area 51 -The area in Nevada where many people believed UFO research was undertaken by the government. Now commonly used as an official area that isn’t acknowledged to the general population or a private club that restricts membership.
  • Bambification-Taking real life people and converting them into cartoon characters.
  • beta -Refers to software that is nearly finished and almost market ready. Used for reviews and final testing.
  • BFG -(Big F-cking Gun) Ridiculous weapon used in many movies and games.
  • black holes-Referring to current fashion of wearing almost entirely nothing but black.
  • blue badge-Microsoft employees who work for the company as that is the color of their badge.
  • Blues Brothers Rule -In video games and other scenarios that portray that no matter how they act or what they do, the main characters are the heroes.
  • Borgware -From the Star Trek series and refers to software which installed, still requires the use of products from the same company to work efficiently or not at all.
  • Buffy -Referring to the lead character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and pertains to a tough girl.
  • Charlie Brown -Someone who is geared to fail in just about what ever they try. Usually the fault is their own.
  • cheats -Special coding programmed into computer programs which allow the users to circumvent the normal way of doing things. In games, it would give them enhanced abilities. Most cheat codes for video games are put into public areas.
  • Coaster-A CD-Rom disk which contains useless information (or is a terrible program/game/system) that it is more functional as a coaster for drinks.
  • code grinder -Derogatory description of people hired to punch in code so that even thought they may be working on high tech computer equipment, the work resembles more of a factory or assembly line.
  • Cracker-A person who can break the security system on a computer system.
  • Cybercafe-Usually coffee shops that have Internet services available for use.
  • Cyberpunk-Movement in science fiction which deals with a blending of the hard-boiled detective novels and futuristic technology of implants, prosthetics, and computer/mind interfacing. The future is usually portrayed as dark and foreboding.
  • Cybrarian-Someone who makes a living doing online research and retrieving information. Same as data surfer.
  • Data Surfer-Someone who makes a living doing online research and retrieving information. Same as Cybrarian.
  • Dead trees-Paper. Refers to how paper is outdated with the explosion of computers. In other words, books and paper products are now nothing more than dead trees.
  • Dilbert-From the popular comic strip and deals with a nerd who must work in an environment where management doesn’t understand how to use the latest technology. Often satirical, it shows the corporate world failing to develop to the next level of technology. A Dilbert is referring to a computer user who must content with the ineptness of upper management.
  • Dumpster diving-To search out dumpsters outside of companies to find stuff throw away such as technology, information, and even furniture and computer supplied.
  • Easter egg -A hidden program in many games and systems which, once discovered, allows special privileges or information. Virtually all programs contain at least one Easter Egg left by the original programmers.
  • Egosurfing-Searching the Internet for your name and how often it occurs on search engines.
  • Face mail-Delivering items directly to a person as opposed to utilizing email or inter-office telephone.
  • fan fiction-Fictional stories written by fans to expand a popular novel or film. Most major series (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.) have a tremendous amount of fan fiction written by devotees.
  • Fen-People who regularly attend fantasy and role-playing conventions.
